I’m not a writer I’m an actor

At the very least I am a film actor.

Let me explain. My novel, and my short stories, are written linearly I started at the front, write  the beginning, then the middle, and then the end. After that I go back and edit and clean up. Deleting bits that didn’t work, tightening passages and sentences until they go from crap and so-so.

What this mean is that the emotion hearts of the scenes are written as they occur. Love and Loyalty has me in some new territory.

I have a list of 13 new scenes that need to be written and inserted to expand the scope of the novel to fit my new vision. They are not being written in a linear fashion. That means one moment I’m writing a tender love scenes between two characters and the next scene is one of characters manipulating and deceiving each other, then to a scene of high-powered politics and office games with dangerous consequences. Emotionally I am being whipped back and forth as I write in a fashion to is alien to me, yet it has not been a stough as I thought it would have been.

I can see the end of the process. (thank god) I so want to push this out to my beat readers and see if this is working as well as I suspect.

I also want to get back to reading novels and to writing them. (I don’t read novels while I write one because if I did better writers would suck up all my time and I would get nothing done.)

Recovering

Well, the cold/bug that has bedeviled me and my sweetie-wife seems to be abating. She’s going back to work in the morrow and I’m starting to feel well enough to return to my chores and duties.

I am not well enough to stay up late watching movies tonight so there shan’t be a Sunday Night Movie Feature this week. However I will still talk film tomorrow with a  brief review of Pirate Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, whihc we saw this morning and enjoyed.

I also hope to return to editing and writing on Love & Loyalty tomorrow. This cold/bug has had me so fogged that I could not think creatively.

Speaking of my writing, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades has been submitting for distribution through smashwords. In a couple of weeks it should be available through all the major eBook sites, Amazon, B&N, Sony, Apple, etc, and today I made it available through Smashwords as a free download for part of their Operation eBook which supplies free eBooks to services men and women deployed overseas. Hopefully I can lift a few spirits and make tedium less tedious.

p.s.

My sweetie-wife has decided to wait until after Worldcon, in August, before getting herself a new pet bird, but I am happy she will get herself another pet. She does love her birds and I miss the little fellow too.

Making really good progress

So I am nearly 17 chapters into Love and Loyalty , out of a total of 30 chapters, so I can seen the end of the project. I am spending a lot more time writing and less blogging and gaming as I speed toward the finish.

I have also finished with the correction to Horseshoes & Hand Grenades. Now I need to format it, copyright it, and submit and I will have self-published my first anthology.

Very Busy

No Sunday Night Movie this week as I was way too tired after spending the day at JPL to watch a film past 10 in the evening. No complaints from me on this score, the JPL open houses are always fun affairs for a geek like me.

I’m pretty busy tonight. The work on Love & Loyalty is going quite well and I hope to have a beat read copy of this version produced soon. Also my sweetie-wife finished the copyedits to my anthology Horseshoes & Hand Grenades, so I am working on that as well.

All in all, I am busy.

Pluses and Minuses

I got a lot done on Love and Loyalty tonight. New scenes edited, a fill chapter edited and corrected. really without the headaches plaguing me I can get back into my old groove. However I lost track of time and I will have to wait until tomorrow for my Sunday Night Movie post. The novel must come first.

Yeah Writing!

Today turned out to be a pretty good writing day. I have gotten a full two chapter corrected and saved, bringing my total to 11 chapters edited and corrected. The novel was originally 29 chapters long, but that number is no longer valid. Current count is 30, but I knew new chapters a waiting to be composed. Still I am a good way into the latest version and I fairly happy with the results.

I have to doff my hat to my writers group for their truly invaluable assistance. Their sharp and helpful critiques have shaped and strengthened this novel. The narrative flows better and the book starts stringer thanks to their feedback. If the headaches stay away, and I see my headache doc tomorrow, then I should be able to maintain a good flow on this project.

Another good day

I had a slight twinge of a headache this morning, but a quick dose of my Rx killed that damnable thing before it could form. The mort irritating thing I have had to deal with is being do throughly tired today. For some unfathomable reason I could not get to sleep last night.

I crawled into bed, sleepy, about my usual time, 11 pm, but I could not get to sleep until past 1am. I dragged today, but still sleepy is better than living with a migraine.

Tonight I got another chapter edited, the final author’s note added to Horseshoe & Hand Grenades, and more ground work laid out for my D&D game, so I am not complaining. I expect to turn H&H over to my sweetie-wife for copyediting on saturday, then once she has finished with it and I have entered to changes, optimistically I am expecting few, it will register for my copyright notice and start formatting for publication. Maybe two or three weeks and it should eb available for sale. I’m still thinking 99 cents.

Glorious Day!

So I saw my headache doctor today. (To be pedantic, I saw the Physician’s Assistant, but she is sharp and on the ball so I am happy with her work.) The chain migraine were simply unbearable and growing in strength. Soon I would have been missing work at my day job, you know, the one that actually pays the bills.  So I arranged for a few hours off this morning and went for help.

Help I got.

I am current taking three medications to break the wide swath of inflammation that is apparently marching across my the surface of my brain as Nazis did across Europe. One pill combines two medications into a horse pill of operatic size, then there is another medication that I took a lot of today, I will take less on each day that follows until I am taking none by Monday.

This combination is working because for most of today I have been pain free. Of it is glorious to be back. Now, I am tired, my sleep has been disturbed, but man I feel so much better.

Tonight I actually got editing done on Love & Loyalty, a new chapter fully corrected and ready for placement in the final novel. I got more work done on Horseshoes & Hand Grenades, that should be ready for my sweetie-wifes cool corrections by the weekend. AND I got some cool idea put into place for my D&D (3.5 edition) game for this weekend.

All in all, as Boromir is wont to say in extended versions of the films, “Today is a good day.”

Book Cover

So I set today aside to work on the cover for my anthology Horseshoes and Hand Grenades. This project is moving along very nicely and I expect to have a copy turned over to my sweetie-wife for proofreading soon, possibly by the end of next week. After that it’s formatting issues, filing for the copyright registrations, and submitting it to Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Smashwords for ebook distribution.

My honest expectation is that aside from a handful of copies I really will not sell many, but even just a few means that these stories are being read and that is the purpose. For a story that is not being read is a sad thing indeed.

Now, here is the cover as it currently stands. Let me know what you think.
