general posts about my life

Welcome to 2013 goodbye to 2012

Today was my first day job day back at the desk and so I can safely say that the new year has begun. Strangely New Year’s Day didn’t feel all that different to me yesterday. I stayed at home and relaxed, my sweetie-wife did some shopping and we played a couple of games. (Star Trek The Original Series: the Deck Building Game & Dominion, but fun games.)

I look back at 2012 and see that I achieved all my writing goals. Stories submitted to at least three pro-level publications, entered all four quarters of Writers of The Future, and completed the first draft of my latest novel. (That one was down to the wire with a Dec 28th final session.) Once the novel was completed in its first draft I relaxed and planned on no more writing for about a month.

My plan is to read the novels I have purchased, but have laid around on my Nook unread. In fact I have read two books already, Characters, Emotion & Viewpoint by Nancy Kress it is craft book on writing and it is very good. Also I finished reading last night, Zombie Movies  by Glenn Kay and encyclopedia of zombie movies from the 1930’s through about 2004. For novels I am currently reading The Apocalypse Codex by Charles Stross, and after that I have Snuff by Terry Pratchett, A Summer of Night by Dan Simmons and Quantum Coin by E.C. Myers.

Somewhere in the middle of all that I will start writing again about Feb, working on my next entry for the Writers of the Future, and then start revising Command & Control. After all that? Well, write another book.

A quite busy life

I’ve been away from the ‘net, but it is because real life has been ratehr hectic and busy. Not all of this busy has been a bad thing. I am continuing work on my new Seth jackson novel, today I passed 25,000 words and I still have not grown to hate it, I’m awaiting results for Q2 Writers Of The Future, I saw a dear friend during Comic-Con (which I did not attend but she did) and I have started work on a space RPG system building off the D20 open game content.

I have also been a little stressed at the day job has been very busy and my arthritis has been acting up, however I will not cry into my soup.  I am on the whole happy and productive.

A pleasant holiday

Even though the 4th fell in the middle of the week, throwing off my internal clock, I had a quite pleasent holiday.
The evening of the 4rd, we had friends over for board and card gaming. Afterwards, when my sweetie-wfe had gone to bed, it turned into a lively politicla discussion with two progressive, two conervatives, and myself.
The 4th itself was a day spent with my sweetie-wife. We walked over amile through trails where the regions natural biome had been preserved. Then we played a card game of Dominion, she won, but our skills are so closely matched that most of the time it is the luck of the deck that makes the difference.
We finished with a nice dinner, hmmm steak, and watching the second half of 1982’s Cat People. I hadn’t seen the film since the early 80’s and my sweetie had never seen it unedited.
We did not go out to fireworks – I stayed in and watched a classic Noir film Naked City –so we did not see san diego grad goof.
Hope everyone had a fine and fun fourth.

A generally busy day

So today has been doing tax paperwork, oh please stop the joyous fun, and prepping for the D&D (3.5) games I will be running tonight.

Because of that I do not expect to do any posting today. You will have to entertain yourself.

A pleasant discovery

Well, we have had the car for a week now and I have to say that I am quite pleased with this purchase. I did discover a pleasant surprise on Thursday and it is one that will help me be more productive as a writer.

My normal routine is that I leave my day-job about 4 in the afternoon and drive to my sweetie-wife’s place of employment. I arrive generally about 4:30 and then I have half an hour to wait until she is done for the day and we can head home together.

Thursday I slid the driver’s seat as far back as it would go, even though I am tall I tend to drive fairly close to the wheel I suspect a lot of my height is in my torso, discovering that there was enough room between me and the steering column for my laptop, unfolded and totally usable.

Well that is just great! I have discovered another 20-25 minutes a day and over a week that is 100-125 minutes or close to two hours of extra writing time.

Well this is something to look forward to

Today instead of going to work I went to my newest addition to my collection of medical professionals whom are looking after my health, an orthodontist. The office was pleasant, quick, and professional.

The short answer is that the orthodontist agrees with what my sleep specialist said two years ago, that my jaw is misaligned and should be corrected with surgery. My sleep specialist suggested the possibility if surgery to help with the sleep apnea, here the same condition, the misaligned jaw, is causing undue pressures on my teeth and as I age the likelihood of breaking teeth, as I did last month, increases.

I have a round of 3-D X-ray to get imaged, and a bite impression to be impressed and after that is analyzied we will know the best course of action. Depending if we can get the jaw surgery covered under my major medical to treat my apnea, it’s likely I will get that surgery. If not, we’ll make due with orthodonic work to realign my teeth and try to decrease the pressure. Either way it looks like 2012 will be another fun medical year.

Please, don’t think I am carping or complaining. I am fortunate compared to family members and friends who are suffering with far more serious issues. There is element of depression to having to go under the knife again, but truly I know I am still a lucky fellow.

In other mixed news, I have to say this was the nicest rejection slip I have gotten…

Please excuse my tardiness in responding to your manuscript – the better ones take the longest.  I enjoyed reading Love and Loyalty, but I don’t feel I can offer representation at this time.  The marketplace is more selective than ever and I must keep a modest list.

Today has been more relaxing

Yesterday was long, stressful and tiring with the search for and purchasing of a new car. (A used car to be precise but it is new to our household.) It induced a migraine and left be very little time to prep for my D&D game. Thought the day ended well. I thank the game worked and I have several new plot elements moving nicely.

Today was a day spent with my sweetie-wife. We shopped, we ate lunch at a tasty deli, we procured mats for a our top protect the carpeting, and we played games. All in all a nice day.

A too busy day

No time for real posting, as I feared. Car shopping took far longer than I would have like, but in the end we did buy a replacement car. A 2009 Toyota Corolla that still under power train warranty until 2016, and full warranty until next March next year.

I test drove a Prius and I love how quiet and smooth the car is but man a man of my height cannot be comfortable in that compartment.
