The Faux Patriots

I am a child of the Cold War; born the same year the Communist constructed the Berlin Wall. For those who are perhaps too young to know or remember the Cold War was a global struggle between the The West, The United States and her Allies, also called the Free World and The East, The USSR and her client states. (If a nation belonged to neither group it was referred to as the Third World and overwhelmingly these nations were destitute, and that label became synonymous an impoverished country.)

The Free World was hardly perfect. At the start of the Cold War the English still ruled their global Empire and the United States remained a heavily segregated nation with its large black population surviving as second-class citizens. How could this state of affairs justify the honorific ‘Free’?

The answer is that the governments of the Free World were accountable to their people. Even with the stain of America’s Jim Crow laws the free, fair, and open elections in America held the government of the United States answerable to its people. The very fact of that accountability held the seeds to the changes that destroyed Jim Crow and to this day drag us further along the road to actual justice and equality.

The Soviets and their client states held no free, fair, or open elections and were immune, until revolution, from the will of their subjects. This is the essence that separated the West from the East, the crucial factor that drove the Cold War, and fuels decades of conflict, open and clandestine, costing lives and fortunes, and held the shadow of thermonuclear annihilation over the entire world and it is this bedrock foundational principle that the Modern Republican Party has abandoned.

Make no mistake about it. The GOP as it currently stands, wedded and inseparable from Trump and his grifters unwilling to issue a party platform in its most recent presidential election favoring instead to commit itself to the ever-changing messages from its leader, has abandoned free, fair, and open elections. The Republican Party, a party that once defined itself by its opposition to the Soviet Block now openly plats to subvert election and dismiss violent attempts to prevent the transfer of authority because of a free, fair, and open election did not produce the results they desired. This, not corporate tax rates, no abortion, nor gun control, is the defining issue of our time and no person supporting the Republican party has any moral justification in calling themselves a patriot.

Streaming Review: A Song Called Hate

My sweetie-wife is a fan of an Icelandic BDSM inspired metal band called Hatari. This weekend a documentary about the band’s entry into the 2019 Eurovision contest dropping on the streaming service Vimeo but region locked against the US and the UK. Luckily, I had just upgraded my Norton anti-virus subscription to include their VPN (Virtual Private Network) capability and after resetting out location to Finland managed to unlock and rent the documentary.

First time documentary director Anna Hildur follows the controversial band noted for their outspoken style as they prepare to play in Tel Aviv Israel with a clear intention to violate Eurovision’s prohibition on making any political statement as part of the contest.

As anyone who really knows me understands Metal is not one of my preferred musical genres. However, that doesn’t impede my ability to enjoy a good documentary and have respect for artists willing to risk standing and cash in order to make a stand for what they believe is right. Art, on some level, is always political. Even if an artist makes even conscious choice to avoid political statements or stands that itself is a political stand. I am not here to comment on the correctness or fallacy of Hatari’s position concerning the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, but I will respect that they did not take their position lightly or without forethought.

A Song Called Hate does a very admirable job of revealing the member of Hatari as people and moves beyond the surface level of their costumes and performance. Without having been told there was nothing about the production that would have informed me that this was a first-time feature documentary director. At 90 minutes the run time perfectly balances the need to probe deep into its subjects but without overstaying in any particular scene.

All in all, thought the music is not to my taste and I am far from equipped to judge its quality A Song Called Hate is an illuminating and well-crafted piece of documentary cinema.

Various Political Thoughts

First up: Abortion. Well, the SCOTUS has taken up a major abortion case where a state law plainly contradicts the landmark ruling Row v Wade which recognized the right to an abortion. With its new 6/3 conservative dominance it is not inconceivable that Roeis overturned opening the door to GOP states across the nations to ban the procedure. It is also possible that instead of overturning the ruling could be gutted to the point where it scarcely matters but technically remains in force, a zombie precedent. No matter how is comes out it is likely to send blast waves through the political landscape as this decision will arrive during the heat of the 2022 midterm elections. How it effects the voters is unknown. What is clear is that turbulent times are ahead.

Second: We were lucky that Trump is an idiot. When RBG died during the final weeks of the 2020 election I feared that Trump would actually leave the seat vacant as a threat to the Republicans who dislike him and were unlikely to vote for him. ‘re-elect me or lose the seat,’ so to speak. Given his thuggish nature and that it would pressure those fence sitters to side with him it could have given him that election. Only as few tens of thousands of votes in the right places and he could have won it while being behind by 7 million votes. But Trump was far too stupid to see such a plainly obvious strategy and now he’s being criminally investigated by state and federal offices.

Third: The 2022 midterms may be the most consequential election in our times or even our history. The GOP has forsaken democracy, betrayed the precepts of the union, dishonored the memory of the people who gave their lives in service to our system of government and replaced all ideology with devotion to a single person, Trump. They have embraced the ‘big lie’, convinced millions that the election was fraudulent, and have demonstrated that nothing it beyond their amoral horizons to gain and retain power. If the GOP wins congress in 2022 it is that class that will have their hands on the levers of power the next presidential election and they will not need the prompting of a murderous traitorous mob to steal the election.

Liz Cheney the Liberal

Representative Liz Cheney, daughter of Dick Cheney vice-president under G.W. Bush, is, for the moment, the third ranked Republican member of the US House of Representatives, with only the House Minority Leader and Republican Whip more senior. In February she survived a conference vote to remove her from that post but now the troops are restless again and many feel that she can’t survive another vote. When you look are her policy positions it’s very clear that she’s out of step with the GOP. She is;

  • Pro Life and against Federal Funding for abortions
  • Votes consistently for tax cuts
  • Want to eliminate benefits from the Dep of Ed
  • Advises that nothing should be done about global climate change
  • Wants to abolish the EPA
  • Wants to force states to honor out of state concealed carry gun permits
  • Wants to abolish ‘Obamacare’

With such blatant left wing nearly socialist stands is it any wonder that the House GOP conference wants to get rid or her?

I mean seriously that fact that she voted to hold Trump accountable and refusing to repeat his lie that that 2020 election was stolen could not possibly be the sole reason that she is going to be politically crucified. Trump is the former guy, he holds no formal position in the GOP, and he lost the election, the party couldn’t possibly be cowed and beaten and prostrate before him as their orange god-king now, could they? The repeated attempts to overthrow the results of a free, fair, and honest election could not be the beating heart of today’s conservatives, could it?

Of course, it is. There is not conservative party there is only Trump’s party and for the good of the nation it must be burned to the ground.

The Satanic Q

How many of you remember the satanic panic of the 1980s and 1990s? Remember that America was swept up in a moral panic that from coast to coast a secret network of satanic worshipers were sexually and physically abusing children? It seems insane to contemplate that thousands and thousands of people seriously believed that bloody murders and sacrifices were routinely performed by a secret cabal operating under everyone’s noses. Which in San Diego’s local case included accusation that a mentally and physical challenged man had not only abused child in his care but had also somehow managed to slaughter both a giraffe and an elephant as part of the satanic ritual.

These cases had no basis in reality. What they had were an easy method of isolating and directing hate towards others in ‘defense’ of mythical normalcy.

Which brings us to our current version of this deranged and dangerous mindset, Q Anon.

The Satanic Panic of the 80s and 90s had to grow slowly passing by word of mouth, rumor, and poorly sourced local reporting but Q Anon with its equally absurd assertions that a world-wide web of elites is secretly abusing and murdering children exploded across the nation and beyond with the speed of internet communications. I see the similarities between the satanic panic and Q Annon as quite important. Both were birthed from conservative culture, equally certain that secret insidious forces are at work and being ignored by authorities and possessed with the zealot’s zeal for their own righteousness.

The satanic panic of the 80s and 90s destroyed lives the moral panic of Q Anon may destroy democracy.

The GOP Doesn’t Care

The GOP Doesn’t Care

The GOP doesn’t care if you contract and die from COVID 19.

The GOP does care about drag queens reading fairytales to kids.

The GOP doesn’t care if you a killed in a mass shooting.

The GOP does care which bathroom you use.

The GOP doesn’t care if you are poisoned by lead in in your drinking water.

The GOP does care if wealthy people pay more in taxes.

The GOP doesn’t care if you die because you cannot afford your insulin.

The GOP does care if children’s books with racism are withheld from the public.

The GOP doesn’t care if you get cancer from pollution.

The GOP does care that your employer can determine your healthcare.

The GOP doesn’t care for democracy.

But the GOP adores their golden god-king Trump.

Disorganized Chauvin Trail Thoughts

It is difficult to judge a jury’s verdict from news reports. There is a vast difference between sitting the court room hearing all the testimony not hearing things that are reported and repeated to the public and coming to a conclusion based upon the fragments in reporting but with all that said to me it looks like they came to the right conclusion, guilty on all counts.

While some of my conservative friends try to dismiss race as any factor in police misconduct and some of my liberal friends seem to see it as the only factor, I try to have what I hope is a more holistic view.

To me there is no doubt that race and racism is a factor, an important one, but far from the only element that contributes to the terrible outcomes in the manner in which our nations police’s its population.

Another vital element is the legal precept of ‘Qualified Immunity’ which shields so many police officers from the consequences of their actions. If actions are free from consequences that there is no incentive to correct future behavior.

The culture of policing in this nation is also a factor in its abuse. Police do not behave as public servants but as an occupying force. The very concept that citizens are referred to as ‘civilians’ reenforces the mindset of an invasive military force. Coupled with the self-segregation and the ‘blue code’ of silence and you have a powerful cocktail for high-handed abuse.

But police culture is a sub-culture of the broader American culture and that is a major contributing factor as well.

American culture is violent. We engaged in violence more often than other western cultures, we celebrate violence in a media, we idolize its practitioners, it is no surprise that American Football is far more popular here than international version, so is it really that surprising that our police forces are also exceptionally violent? The police, for all their self-segregation and isolation remain products of our culture a culture whose dominate myth is the lone man taming a vast wilderness with violence.

There are no easy, fast solutions to our troubles and the road ahead remains difficult.

We Are Westview NJ

In Disney +’s first Marvel Cinematic Universe television series WandaVision Wanda Maximoff after a life of trauma and her world shattered by grief explodes with a power she never conceived of having transforming the dying town of Westview New Jersey in her escapist fantasy of reality where life became an endless procession of sitcom episodes. Actual reality intrudes forcing Wanda out of her delusional and her artificial reality.

The series sits as a perfect metaphor for the Republican party’s current madness and sadly we are the imprisoned citizens of Westview forced into another’s delusion of reality, trapped by their fears and inability to face facts that are too painful to admit.

The litany of GOP lies, and delusions is extensive; the January 6th attack and insurrection was the product of Antifa masquerading as Trump supporters, systemic voter fraud stole the election, mask mandates are tyranny, COVID-19 is an inconsequential flu, racism only exits against white people, thoughts and prayers prevent mass shootings, Christianity is oppressed and in danger of vanishing, and many many others. For some these are calculated lies used to seize and maintain power for far too many these are their reality, and it is a reality as valid as Wanda’s sitcom life.

Unlike the residents of the fictional Westview there is no outside force or agency coming to our rescue. We have the reclaim actual reality for ourselves. The GOP must be driven from the lever of power until they have expelled the delusions from their system. This did not begin with Trump and it did not end with his defeat. The long road to sanity’s recovery still is ahead of us.

We Need Election Reform to Save the GOP

Between H.R. 1, the fact that the current president had about 7 million votes more than his opponent and still only barely won the contest, and the deeply imbedded partisan in the system there has been a lot of talk about reforms needed to the USA’s election systems but there is another reason to enact reforms fast, to save the Republican Party.

Out system is a two-party system and the sort of ground up redesign to change that is simply not in the cards. Given that we locked into a two-party system it is essential that both parties be sane, viable, organizations fairly representing broad cross-sections of the American electorate. This is not the path we are on.

Our congressional districts having been gerrymandered into local one-party dominance enforces a drive for either party to the extremes. An incompetent, insane person like Marjorie Taylor Greene only has to win their primary to win a seat in government. As more gerrymandering draws more districts into this pattern the real election become the primary where fewer voters and more extreme voters decide the outcome. This was bad enough before 2016 but after Trump’s takeover of the Republican party and its commitment to a dwindling base of support and its adherence to lies and conspiracy theories, this is a design for disaster. As long as the primary process controls the outcome the situation will only get worse.

This is not an argument to kill off ‘conservatism’ however you might define that. This is the way to keep both parties, though the rot is far deeper on the right than on the left, responsive to the general electorate and not their fanatical bases. If we do not reform our election right now, we are headed for one of two futures, either the GOP, more insane and less connected to reality becomes the dominate political force by way of its current anti-democratic attacks on voting and the franchise or the Democratic Party becomes immune to challenge because the GOP has shrunk itself to a base unable to contest national elections completing its transformation into a regional rump party.

Both outcomes are bad for the Union. Our system requires two healthy sane parties and only by election reform can we return to that ideal.

Quick Thoughts

Running a little late this morning after getting engrossed in what looks to be a fairly balanced article on both the 1619 Project and 1776 report so here are a few fast thoughts for the morning.

1) I have finished the first draft of my new novel. This one will require more revisions that previous first drafts as to character and plot I made changes and discovered new paths not represented in the outline.

2) Cuomo’s troubles are a perfect example of why you should not people anyone on a pedestal. His news briefings during the height of last year’s pandemic cases in New York presented him as sort of an ‘Anti-Trump’ and yet like Trump he hid information that would hurt him and apparently is a sexual creep as well. It should be noted however that the Mainstream new is reporting on his misdeeds and the accusation and not playing hide the salami as Fox does with Republican scandals the presenting the different between bias and propaganda.

3) It’s great seeing the speed of vaccination increase and with J&J’s vaccine not approved for emergency use that’s another weapon in our fight against COVID.
