Suit shopping

Today we learn how little your host knows about fashion and clothing. (Stop giggling Gail.)
At my day job I have an interview for upper-level training on Friday. This means a panel interview. Oh how I hate that. I never do well with interviews. Anyway, so today my wife got my suit out of the closet to get it cleaned and ready for Friday.
No good, moths or something had gotten at the slacks and eaten holes in the suit. (It was fine just in May when I used it for a friend’s wedding, but oh well.) So we made an emergency run to the Men Fashion Depot where i bought the suit more than three years ago to get a matching set of slack for my jacket.
I know nothing about fashion. I thought go in there with the eaten slack, show them to the girl and I;d be shown which slack I needed.
Nope.
The slacks I had bought in December are a herring-bone pattern. That is only made in winter and fall. It is not available in summer. Silly me though grey is grey is grey. Nope there is summer grey and there is winter grey.
Luckily they were having a sale and I was able to pick up a new suit — one that even fit better I thought — for not too much money.

Still, it seems silly to me.

It isn’t silly; you just haven’t looked at it properly.

Haven’t you ever seen someone who looked REALLY GOOD – I mean someone you know well and all of a sudden they just look better? (Models and such do not count for the purposes of this discussion – Many people get paid big bucks to make sure that they look good. Like anything else, it is easier when a group of paid professionals does the thinking on a subject.) At any rate, often that looking better is because of fashion – new clothes, new glasses, new hair style, etc. Suits are really important for men. Men as a group by fewer suits that women buy business clothes and they tend to hold on to them and wear them longer (there are exceptions, usually related to profession) and that make the suit purchase critical. In addition, suits are much better made in construction and tailoring than (again) most of the clothes women wear. If you are going to put work and money into something, do it right – and most suits do so.

What was the fabric? With what was it lined? Single-breasted or doublebreasted? (I think you’d look really good in a double-breasted, but thats a guess.) So, it’s gray – what shade? How does it look with your skin tone? What kind of shirt are you wearing? What kind of tie? All of this goes into a suit and SO much more. (Yes, I mean for you to answer these questions. I want to know!)

There used to be a store in the Gardens Mall in Palm Beach – The Custonm Shop – where you could buy custom made shirts and suits. We bought Arthur five shirts there and never regretted it. There are many, many options, even in a “simple” button down shirt but, dang, with the ones we picked he sure looked good! We wanted to do that for him sometime with a suit but the store closed or moved before we could get back down to act on it. Enjoy your suit and good luck for your potential promotion!!
